Happy, Creative, Confident - Inspired to Achieve Together
Assessment for Learning (AfL) Road Maps
Assessment for Learning is an important part of teaching at The Rofft School because it helps us understand how each child is getting on and what they need next to progress along their learning journey. Rather than relying solely on formal tests, staff use daily observations, conversations and a range of practical and play based activities to gently check understanding and guide next steps. This approach allows teaching to be adapted to suit individual needs, ensuring children are supported, challenged, and celebrated as they learn. By sharing clear learning goals and talking positively about progress, children develop confidence, curiosity and a strong sense of achievement.
Assessment for Learning Strategies
At The Rofft, we use our ‘Road to Progress’ AfL maps to ensure a consistent approach across our progression steps – The Explorers, The Discoverers, and The Adventurers. These maps include a set of shared, non‑negotiable strategies that support high‑quality learning for all children:
-
Questioning and Modelling Strategies – adults ask thoughtful questions and model learning to help children think deeply and try new ideas.
-
Planning, Collaborating and Presenting – children are supported to plan their learning, work together, and share what they have learned in ways appropriate to their age and stage.
-
Giving and Following Up on Formative Feedback – clear, kind feedback is given during learning, with opportunities for children to respond and make progress straight away.
These strategies help ensure learning at The Rofft is purposeful, supportive, and meaningful for every child.
